It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and (during the prayer) removed his shoes, so the people also removed their shoes. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he asked: "Why did you people remove your shoes?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah! We saw you removing your shoes, so we also removed ours." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and informed me that there was impurity on my shoes. Therefore, when any one of you comes to the mosque, he should turn his shoes over and check them. If he sees any impurity on them, he should clean it off with the ground and then pray in them."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “When one of you steps on filth with his sandal, then indeed the earth (dust) is a purifier for it.” And in another narration: “When he steps on filth with his leather socks (khuffayn), then the earth (dust) is their purifier.” (Abu Dawud: 385, 386; Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar: 1/511; Hakim: 1/166; Bayhaqi: 2/406) Whether the impurity on the shoes or leather socks is wet or dry, in both cases it will be cleaned by rubbing (against the earth). However, keep in mind that this is a concession (rukhsah) from the Shari‘ah; if, in this situation, the command had been given to wash the shoes and leather socks, it would have entailed great hardship for the Ummah.
Observe the spirit of obedience to the Messenger among the noble Companions: when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam removed his shoes during prayer, they too considered it appropriate to remove theirs at that very moment. Subhan Allah.
