Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَلِلّٰہِعَلَیالنَّاسِحِجُّالْبَیْتِمَنِاسْتَطَاعَاِلَیْہِسَبِیْلًا۔} … “And pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all people who are able to find a way to it.” (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 97)
By “able to find a way,” it is meant that one possesses sufficient travel expenses for the journey, while those left behind—wife and children—have lawful means of sustenance available to them. The route should be safe and secure, and life and property should be protected. One should be physically healthy and capable of undertaking the journey, and, in the case of a woman, she must have a mahram (unmarriageable male relative) with her. The condition of having a riding animal (means of conveyance) cannot be made an absolute requirement for ability (istita‘ah); those who are able to walk on foot cannot use the absence of a riding animal as an excuse.
