Hadith 4079

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the place of Rauha (on the way back from Makkah to Madinah) when he met a caravan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with salam and asked: Who are you people? They replied: We are Muslims. Then they asked: And who are you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am the Messenger of Allah. Upon hearing this, a woman, in a state of anxiety, grabbed her child by the arm and took him out of the litter and said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there Hajj for this one too? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes, and the reward will be for you.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The incident occurred while the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was returning from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawwarah after performing Hajj; the place of Ruhā’ is located thirty-six miles from Madinah Munawwarah. The scholars are unanimous that a child’s Hajj does not suffice for his obligatory Hajj (Hajjat al-Islam); that is, when he reaches maturity and possesses the means, Hajj will again become obligatory upon him. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Any child who performs Hajj, then reaches the age of responsibility, must perform another Hajj; and any slave who performs Hajj, then is freed, must perform another Hajj.” (Ibn Abi Shaybah, Sunan al-Bayhaqi, and it is authentic as a marfu‘ narration. See: Irwa’ al-Ghalil: 4/155)

The reward of the child’s Hajj will also be recorded in his book of deeds, and this reward will also be granted to his father or mother who facilitated the Hajj for him. The restrictions of ihram will apply to the child during Hajj; if it is impossible for him to intend Hajj or ‘Umrah and to pronounce its words, then his father or mother will perform these matters on his behalf.
