Hadith 4078

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My mother passed away without performing Hajj, so can I perform Hajj on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. The woman further asked: My mother also owed a month of fasting, so can I fast on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The following rulings are established from these hadiths regarding Hajj:

& If a person possesses wealth but, due to old age or an illness (from which there is apparently no hope of recovery), is unable to perform Hajj and its requirements, then it is necessary for him to send someone on his behalf to perform Hajj.

& The matter of Hajj is like that of a debt; a person who, despite having the means, is deprived of fulfilling this obligation, is indebted to Allah Ta'ala.

& Hajj can be performed on behalf of a deceased person.

& In this regard, men and women can deputize for one another.

& It is necessary for the one performing Hajj on behalf of another (Hajj al-Badal) that he has already performed Hajj for himself, as is evident from the following hadith:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam heard a man saying: "Labbayka ‘an Shubrumah" (I am present on behalf of Shubrumah). The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked: ((Man Shubrumah?)) … "Who is Shubrumah?" He said: He is my brother, or he said: He is my relative. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked him: ((Hajjajta ‘an nafsik?)) … "Have you performed Hajj for yourself?" He replied: No. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Hujja ‘an nafsik, thumma hujja ‘an Shubrumah.)) … "First perform Hajj for yourself, then perform Hajj on behalf of Shubrumah."
