Hadith 4066

. (Second chain of narration) Sayyiduna Aqra’ bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Is Hajj obligatory every year? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: No, rather it is obligatory only once, but whoever performs Hajj after that, it will be voluntary. And if I had answered your question in the affirmative, then Hajj would have become obligatory every year, and if it had been made obligatory every year, you would neither have accepted this command nor acted upon it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is understood that the hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in and of itself, is a binding legal proof (hujjah shar‘iyyah), and its status is not affected by whether it agrees with any verse of the Qur’an or appears to oppose it.

Such opposition can only be apparent, not real. Just as some Qur’anic verses may, on the surface, seem to be in conflict with each other, but they can be reconciled through interpretation, so that they are not actually opposed or contradictory. As for real contradiction or opposition, this does not exist within the Qur’an itself, nor within the ahadith themselves, nor between the Qur’an and the hadith. (Abdullah Rafiq)
