Hadith 4016

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: O Messenger of Allah! If I find the Night of Qadr, which supplication should I make? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Make this supplication: "Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni." (O Allah! You are Forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me.)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Night of Qadr (Laylat al-Qadr) is a night of immense greatness and virtue. To understand its excellence, it is sufficient to comprehend Surah al-Qadr, according to which worship in this one night is better than worship of a thousand months. Certainly, standing (in prayer) on this night is not obligatory, but regarding the one who does not strive to attain the goodness and blessings present in it by standing (in prayer), the blessed hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is as follows: Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that when the month of Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

((QAD JA’AKUM RAMADAN, SHAH’RUN MUBARAKUN, IFTARADA ALLAHU ‘ALAYKUM SIYAMAHU, TUFTAHU FIH ABWABU AL-JANNAH, WA TUGHLAQU FIH ABWABU AL-JAHEEM, WA TUGHALLU FIH AL-SHAYATIN, FIH LAYLATUN KHAYRUN MIN ALFI SHAH’R, MAN HURIMA KHAIRAHAA FAQAD HURIM.)) (al-Nasa’i: 4/129, Musnad Ahmad: 9493, sahih hadith, and this chain is disconnected)

“Ramadan has come to you, it is a blessed month. Allah has made fasting in it obligatory upon you. In this month, the gates of Paradise are opened and all the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. In this month, there is a night which is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its goodness is truly deprived.”

From the last hadith of this chapter, it is understood that this night has a deep connection with Allah’s forgiveness, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in response to the question of Sayyidah A’ishah, taught only this supplication:

ALLAHUMMA INNAKA ‘AFUWWUN TUHIBBU AL-‘AFWA FA’FU ‘ANNI.
Translation: O Allah! You are Forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me.
