Hadith 401

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: "I was a young man without family, and during the Prophetic era I used to spend the night in the mosque. Dogs would come and go (in the mosque), but they would not sprinkle (water) from it."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The jurisprudence (fiqh) of this hadith is that if the traces of impurity are removed due to wind or sunlight, then the ground becomes pure, since the earth itself also possesses the ability to eliminate impurity. Imam Abu Dawud has established this chapter upon this hadith: “Chapter on the Purification of the Earth When It Dries…” (i.e., when the ground dries, it becomes pure). Imam Mubarakpuri rahimahullah said: “Abu Dawud’s reasoning from this hadith that the earth is purified by dryness is correct; I see no objection in it, provided the wording ‘he urinated’ is preserved, and there is no contradiction between this hadith and the hadith of the chapter, for it can be said: the earth is purified in two ways, namely, by pouring water over it, and by dryness and desiccation through the sun or air. And Allah Ta’ala knows best.” That is, if the wording “he urinated” is preserved, then Imam Abu Dawud’s reasoning from this hadith is correct that the ground becomes pure by drying; I have no objection in this. It should be noted that there is no contradiction or opposition between this hadith and the aforementioned hadith (of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu) and the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu regarding the Bedouin, according to which water was poured over the urine made by the Bedouin in the mosque, because it is possible to say that there are two ways for the ground to become pure: either water is poured over it, or it dries through the sun and air. And Allah knows best.
(Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: 1/139)

When a Companion urinated in the Prophet’s Mosque, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that a bucket of water be poured over it, but in this hadith, such an arrangement was not made. The reason for this is that when a dog urinates, its manner is such that only droplets fall on the ground, whose traces disappear quickly. The entry of dogs into the Prophet’s Mosque would not be surprising to a person whose house is in such a village where the mosque has neither walls nor doors, and the mosque itself is unpaved. In reality, despite taking care, in such mosques it often happens that such animals enter; even now, such situations exist that in villages, when the door of a mosque is left open, chickens and cats spread filth on the rows and in the courtyard, and if the door is left open at night, it has often been observed that wild beasts spread filth in the mosque. Now, as for a mosque that has no walls at all, its situation is even more obvious. Just as leaving the door open does not imply that the worshippers there are not careful, similarly, from this hadith it cannot be established that the noble Companions maintained a situation where dogs would come and go in the mosque and urinate. The ahadith in which digging up the affected area is ordered are not authoritative and are weak.
