Hadith 4008

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan, until Allah Almighty caused him to pass away. Then, after him, his wives also observed i'tikaf.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The place for i‘tikaf (spiritual retreat) is only the mosque, as is stated in the command of Allah, the Exalted: {وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوْھُنَّ وَاَنْتُمْ عَاکِفُوْنَ فِی الْمَسَاجِدِ} (Surah al-Baqarah: 187) … “And do not approach your wives while you are in retreat (i‘tikaf) in the mosques.” From the ahadith of this chapter, it is understood that there is no difference between men and women regarding the place of i‘tikaf; women who wish to perform i‘tikaf should also do so in the mosque. In the era of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the i‘tikaf of women also used to take place in the mosque. If, in any area, there is a fear of fitnah (temptation or trial), then women should refrain from performing i‘tikaf; however, this does not mean that the ruling should be changed and arrangements for i‘tikaf should be made in homes.
