It is narrated from Abu Uthman that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) was on a journey. When he stopped at a place, people sent him an invitation to eat, while he was praying. He said: I am fasting. The people set the food, and when they were about to finish, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) came there. The people again invited him to eat, and this time he started eating. Seeing this situation, the people began to look with surprise at the first messenger, because he was the one who had conveyed the message of fasting. But he said: What are you looking at? By Allah! He had said that he was fasting. At that time, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He is telling the truth. The matter is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The fasts of the month of Ramadan and then three fasts of every month are equal to the fasts of the whole year.)) Acting upon this hadith, I had already kept three fasts at the beginning of this month, so now I am breaking my fast on the basis of Allah’s concession, while I had kept the fast to attain manifold reward from Allah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Since the reward for every good deed is at least tenfold, in this way, the reward for three fasts (sawm) observed in a month will be as if one has fasted for the entire month. If a person spends his life with the habit of fasting three days in every month, he will receive the reward of fasting for his whole life. These three fasts can be observed at any time during the month, but if one completes the three fasts by seeking out Mondays and Thursdays, or the “white days” (Ayyam al-Beedh), or other specifically recommended days, then the virtue will increase, as will be evident from some ahadith in the next chapter. However, the prohibition regarding fasting on certain days will remain in effect, for example, fasting only on Friday.
