Humaid bin Abdur Rahman says that Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon in Madinah Munawwarah and said: O people of Madinah! Where are your scholars? I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: This is the day of Ashura, fasting on this day has not been made obligatory upon us, so whoever among you wishes to fast on this day may do so, however, I am fasting. Then the people also fasted.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu performed his first Hajj during his caliphate in 44 AH and his last in 57 AH. Hafiz Ibn Hajar's preferred opinion is that Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu narrated this hadith when he came to Madinah Munawwarah on the occasion of his last Hajj. Since Dhu al-Hijjah is the last month of the Islamic year and Muharram is the first, it is likely that Sayyiduna Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu stayed on after performing Hajj until the Day of Ashura.
