Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah Munawwarah and saw that the Jews were fasting on the 10th of Muharram. He asked them: "What is this day on which you fast?" They said: "This is a great blessed day. On this day Allah Almighty saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, and Musa (peace be upon him) fasted on this day." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am more deserving of Musa (peace be upon him) than you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself fasted on this day and also ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In terms of messengership, religious brotherhood, and outward kinship, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was closer to Musa alayhis salam. But the question arises: why did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam not oppose the Jews in this matter? The best answer is that in this matter, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not commanded to oppose them. However, in the last year of his blessed life, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam expressed the desire that if he remained alive, he would fast on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arrived in Madinah Munawwarah in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, and then when the month of Muharram came, this situation arose.
