(Second chain) A man asked the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: What is your opinion about the fast of Arafah? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I hope from Allah Almighty that He will make this fast an expiation for the sins of the previous and coming two years. He then said: O Messenger of Allah! What is your opinion about the fast of Ashura? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I hope from Allah Almighty that He will make this fast an expiation for the sins of the previous one year.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By "the day of Ashura" is meant the tenth day of Muharram. In the early period of Islam, this fast was obligatory, and its obligation was presented only for one year, that is, at the beginning of the second year of Hijrah, because in that same year the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory. After the obligation of the fasts of Ramadan, the fast of Ashura was declared recommended (mustahabb). Further clarification of this will come in the following ahadith. By "the day of Arafah" is meant the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the day on which the honored pilgrims gather in the plain of Arafah.
