Hadith 3895

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If I did not fear hardship for my Ummah, I would have commanded that the ‘Isha prayer be performed late, and that the miswak be used with every prayer, and that any woman whose husband is present should not fast even for a single day without his permission, except in the month of Ramadan.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is understood that when a wife wishes to keep a voluntary (nafl) fast or intends to make up a missed obligatory (fard) fast, in both cases she should seek permission from her husband, because the husband's right is among those rights which become immediately obligatory, whereas voluntary fasts can be abandoned and the making up of obligatory fasts can be postponed. From this, wives should realize how great the right of their husbands is over them. The reason for the prohibition of keeping a voluntary fast without the husband's permission is the fulfillment of marital duties (wazifah al-zawjiyyah).
