Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The words of this hadith are: “No servant fasts a day in the way of Allah except that, because of that day, Allah distances the Fire from his face by seventy autumns (years).”

The phrase “fi sabilillah” (in the way of Allah) — does it mean jihad or obedience to Allah in general? Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: The first meaning (jihad) is more likely, because in “Fawa’id Abi Tahir al-Dhuhli” I have seen a hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu with these words: “There is no one stationed at the frontier in the way of Allah who fasts a day in the way of Allah…” Ibn Daqiq al-‘Id said: In the common usage, this phrase is used specifically for jihad. (Fath al-Bari: 6/59)

It is a separate matter that one who fasts in such a state should be concerned that he does not become so weak that it causes harm during fighting. In any case, whoever Allah has endowed with resolve and strength, he can combine both virtues: that his days and nights are spent in the path of jihad, and that he deliberately refrains from eating and drinking for the sake of Allah.
