Hadith 3879

Ubaid A'raj says: My grandmother narrated to me that she went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he was eating at that time. It was a Saturday. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her: Come, eat food. But she said: I am fasting. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked her: Did you fast yesterday? She said: No. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Then eat, for there is neither reward nor sin for fasting on Saturday.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The lack of reward or sin in this case applies when a person observes the fast out of ignorance; otherwise, if he does so after having knowledge or out of reverence for Saturday, he will be sinful. From these narrations, it is understood that fasting on Saturday alone is prohibited. However, from hadith number (3869) and (3873), etc., it is understood that it is permissible to fast consecutively for two days—Friday and Saturday. From this concession, it is also possible to deduce that it is permissible to fast consecutively on Saturday and Sunday. This same ruling is established from hadith number (3968) as well. And this is similar to how the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam intended to fast on the 9th of Muharram along with the day of Ashura (10th Muharram); the purpose of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was to oppose the Jews.

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam expressed his intention to fast on the 9th of Muharram in the coming year, not to fast on both the 9th and 10th together. Further clarification on this will come under the dedicated heading regarding the fast of Ashura. Please refer to it. (Abdullah Rafiq)
