Hadith 3869

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Friday is a day of Eid, so do not fast on this day of Eid, except that you fast a day before it or a day after it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of a narration in Sahih Muslim is as follows: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

“Do not single out the night of Friday among the nights for standing (in prayer), and do not single out the day of Friday among the days for fasting, unless it is a fast that one of you regularly observes.”

If all the hadiths related to this subject are considered, it becomes clear that it is permissible for a person to fast on Friday if he also fasts on Thursday or Saturday. Similarly, a person may also fast on Friday if it coincides with a day on which he habitually fasts. For example, if a person fasts every year on the Day of Arafah, i.e., the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, and by coincidence that day falls on a Friday, then it will be permissible for him to fast. The day of Friday is, in this respect, like an Eid, in that it possesses several characteristics not found in the other days of the week. People gather for the Friday prayer just as they gather for the Eid prayer, and there is a Friday sermon just as there is a sermon on Eid. In addition, bathing, applying fragrance, using the miswak, and wearing good clothes—these matters also create a resemblance to Eid. And Allah knows best what is correct.
