Hadith 3856

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! My mother has passed away, and she had a month of fasting due upon her. Can I make up for it on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your mother had a debt, would you have paid it off? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the debt of Allah is more deserving to be fulfilled.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is established from the research of Ibn Qayyim that what is meant here are the fasts (sawm) of vows (nadhar), but the narration in the Sahihayn is general. Therefore, what is meant by this is every fast that was due upon the deceased, whether it was a fast of vow (nadhar) or of Ramadan. As Khatabi has said: In this hadith, the fast of the deceased that is intended is that which was obligatory upon him, whether it was in the form of a vow (nadhar) or in the case of making up missed fasts of Ramadan.
