Hadith 3818

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not observe continuous fasting (wisal), and if anyone among you insists on doing so, then let him observe wisal only until the time of suhoor (pre-dawn meal). The companions said: O Messenger of Allah, you yourself observe wisal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: I am not like you; I spend the night in such a state that there is One who feeds me and One who gives me drink.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The following hadith related to this subject, which has already been mentioned earlier, is also worthy of attention: A Companion radi Allahu anhu says:

A Companion of the Messenger radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, out of compassion for his Companions, forbade them from continuous fasting (wisal) and from cupping (hijamah) while fasting, but he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not declare these acts to be unlawful (haram). In another narration, the wording is: He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not declare these two acts unlawful for any of his Companions. (Abu Dawud: 2374, see also: Hadith no. 3756)

The summary of the above three chapters is that the original preference and inclination of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that people should not practice wisal (continuous fasting). If someone wishes to do wisal, then in light of Hadith no. (3818), he may do so up to the time of suhur (pre-dawn meal); more than this, although there may be allowance, it should not be done.

A question arises: Why did the Companions radi Allahu anhum not immediately comply with the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam instructions regarding wisal, when they were those who would even sacrifice their lives at his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mere gesture? The answer is that in such situations, the Companions understood that the original ruling was in favor of wisal, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself practiced it. However, since the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam preferred ease, leniency, and the avoidance of hardship for them, the Companions’ perspective was that, in order to attain reward and merit, they too would follow the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam even in the most difficult matters. Then, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam clarified the distinction between himself and his Companions, thereby making the issue clear.
