Hadith 3808

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said three times: Avoid continuous fasting (wisal). The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! You yourself observe continuous fasting? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You are not like me in this matter. I spend the night in such a state that my Lord feeds me and gives me drink. You should do only as much as you have the strength for.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … During the period of wisal, there are two possible meanings to the statement that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was given food and drink: (1) That foods and drinks from Paradise were presented to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and wisal was not affected by them, because their ruling is different from worldly foods. (2) What is meant is the comfort, pleasure, and coolness of the eyes that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam received due to obedience to Allah Ta'ala, and because of this, his attention was diverted from eating and drinking.
