Hadith 3773

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, says: One day I felt comfort and energy, so I kissed my wife while I was fasting. Then I went to the service of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Today I have done a great thing, and that is that I kissed my wife while I was fasting. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you rinse your mouth with water while fasting, what do you think about that? I said: There is no harm in it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Then what are you asking about (regarding this kiss)? That is, there is no harm in kissing either.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Whatever the drink may be, it is put into the mouth in order to consume it; thus, putting water into the mouth is the motive and key to drinking water. However, merely putting water into the mouth does not constitute rinsing (kuli) for ablution. The same applies to the ruling regarding kissing one’s wife: it is the motive and key to intercourse (jima‘), but merely kissing does not affect the fast.
