Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is understood that men and women, or only women, or only men, can perform ablution (wudu) together from a single vessel. However, this does not necessarily entail a lack of modesty, because it is possible that this incident of ablution occurred before the revelation of the rulings regarding veiling (purdah), or that close relatives (mahram) performed ablution together in this manner, or that non-mahram individuals performed ablution together while safeguarding their gaze. In this chapter, these ahadith are being used as evidence that the water left over after ablution or ritual bath (ghusl) is pure (tahir) and purifying (mutahhir), because when one person begins ablution or ritual bath from a vessel, that water, for the next person, is considered as water left over from their purification, yet even so, the second person performs ablution or ritual bath with that same water. This means that used water (ma’ musta‘mal) itself is pure and also purifies.
