Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) took suhoor, and when they finished suhoor, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for prayer. Qatadah says: We asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): What was the interval between their finishing suhoor and starting the prayer? He said: The interval was as long as it takes a man to recite fifty verses.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There was an interval equal to the recitation of fifty verses between the completion of the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) and the commencement of the Fajr prayer. Approximately (12 or 13) minutes are sufficient for such a recitation. In light of other texts, the times for suhoor and prayer are fixed, but from this hadith it is understood that there used to be a slight interval between the call to prayer (adhan) for Fajr and the congregation (jama‘ah), and this is possible only when people have already awakened before the time of this prayer. It was for this very purpose that the first adhan was given.
