Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I want to spend the night at your place tonight so that I may perform the night prayer following you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will not be able to keep up with my prayer. Nevertheless, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and performed ghusl behind a cloth curtain while I turned my face the other way, then I did the same. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, (and stood for so long that) I (due to fatigue or sleepiness) was hitting my head against the wall. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan for prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you already given the adhan? He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bilal! When you give the adhan, at that time the light goes straight up towards the sky and that is not the true dawn; the true dawn is when the light spreads (horizontally) along the horizon. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had food brought and ate suhoor.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This narration is weak; nevertheless, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would indeed stand for long periods in prayer, and there are, in fact, two types of dawn (fajr): the false dawn (fajr kadhib) and the true dawn (fajr sadiq). The time for the Fajr prayer and the beginning of the fast both commence with the true dawn (fajr sadiq); the false dawn (fajr kadhib) is still part of the night, during which it is permissible to eat the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), but it is forbidden to perform the Fajr prayer. The following two hadiths clarify these two types.
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There are two dawns: one is called ‘the tail of the wolf’ and it is the false dawn, which rises vertically and does not spread horizontally; and the other dawn spreads horizontally.”
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas radi Allahu anhuma reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There are two dawns: (1) a dawn (the true dawn) in which eating (the pre-dawn meal) becomes forbidden and the prayer becomes permissible, and (2) a dawn (the false dawn) in which the prayer is forbidden and eating (the pre-dawn meal) is permissible.” (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: 1/52/2, Hakim: 1/425, Bayhaqi: 1/377, 457, 4/216, Sahihah: 693)
