Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim Tai says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me about prayer and fasting, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Perform such-and-such prayers and fast in this manner. When the sun sets, you may eat and drink throughout the night, until the white thread becomes distinct from the black thread, and complete the full thirty fasts of (Ramadan), unless the moon is sighted before that. So I took a black thread and a white thread and began to look at them (at the time of suhoor), but they were not becoming clear to me. Therefore, I informed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about this. Upon hearing this, he, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled and said: By the white thread is meant the whiteness of the day becoming distinct from the darkness of the night at the time of dawn.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A narration in Musnad Ahmad is as follows: Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu says: When this verse was revealed: {وَکُلُوْاوَاشْرَبُوْاحَتّٰییَتَبَیَّنَلَکُمُالْخَیْطُالْاَبْیَضُمِنَالْخَیْطِالْاَسْوَدِ} (“And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread at dawn.”) (Surah al-Baqarah: 187), I took two ropes, one black and the other white, and placed them under my pillow. Then I began to look at them, but neither did the white rope become distinct from the black one for me, nor the black from the white. When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and informed him of what I had done. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((If so, then your pillow is indeed very wide! Rather, what is meant is the whiteness of the day becoming distinct from the darkness of the night.)) This has also been narrated by Imam al-Bukhari (1916) and Imam Muslim (1090). From this hadith, it is also established that to understand the verses of the Qur’an and the Prophetic hadiths, intellect alone is not sufficient; rather, it is also necessary to refer to other verses and hadiths.
