Hadith 3710

(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and since he was fasting, at the time of breaking the fast, he called the one responsible for providing a drink and ordered him to bring a beverage. The man replied: O Messenger of Allah! Let it become evening first. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him again, and he again said: O Messenger of Allah! Let it become evening first. This happened three times, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When night comes from the (east), then it is time to break the fast. In another narration, it is stated: When you see that night has come from the (east), then it is time for the fasting person to break the fast.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the narration of Abu Dawud, it is clarified that the one serving the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in this instance was Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu. The phrase, “Let the evening come,” was said by someone who thought that the light and redness still visible indicated that the sun had not yet set. However, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam clarified that the day had ended and the night had begun. This blessed hadith indicates the following three important matters:

1. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam hastened to break the fast immediately after sunset to such an extent that the Companion thought the sun had not yet set.
2. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, despite Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu returning to him three times, displayed excellent character and, instead of rebuking him, acted with gentleness and kindness.
3. If a person suspects that a scholar has forgotten or made a mistake and, on this basis, reminds him, then the scholar should, if there is room for the person’s confusion, not take offense at his words and should clarify the actual issue.
