It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month is (29) days. Then, to explain, he struck one hand on the other twice and on the third time folded his thumb. In another narration: When people mentioned this to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: May Allah forgive Abu Abdur Rahman, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he made a mistake. The real matter was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had separated himself from his wives for a month, and on the (29th) day he came down (from the upper room). People said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): You have come down on the twenty-ninth day (even though you had separated for a month)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, this month is (29) days.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this blessed hadith, from the words of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, it appears as if the month consists of only twenty-nine (29) days. Due to this, Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha objected to him. However, the reality is that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhu has also narrated this hadith from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that sometimes the month is twenty-nine (29) days and sometimes it is thirty (30) days, as is made clear by the next hadith, and this was also the view of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha. The reason for separation from the wives was that the Mothers of the Believers had demanded from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam maintenance and provision beyond his capacity, and for this reason, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took an oath to remain apart for a month. Its explanation will come in Surah al-Ahzab.
