Hadith 3666

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that although the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of all people, he would become even more generous when he met Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, during the month of Ramadan. Every night of Ramadan, Jibreel, peace be upon him, would meet him and they would review the Qur’an together. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was more generous with wealth than the sent wind.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Although generosity was a constant attribute of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, whenever he met the chief of the angels, Jibril alayhis salam, and encountered new knowledge and manifestations, an even greater elevation would occur in his temperament. When he received the special favors of the True Benefactor, the element of generosity and munificence present within him would further develop, and the process of bestowing favors and kindness upon the servants of Allah would begin anew, surpassing what had come before. The very month of Ramadan itself is also a cause for the increase in this attribute. In reality, the change that would occur in the feelings and temperament of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam due to the meeting with Jibril radi Allahu anhu cannot be expressed in words, because the natures are different: on one side is the leader of mankind, and on the other side is the leader of the angels, whereas we only have experience of being familiar with those of our own kind.

Generally, among us, people have fixed the month of Ramadan for the payment of zakat, so the majority consider the payment of zakat alone to be sufficient. However, this attribute of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was related to voluntary charity and almsgiving (nafl sadaqah wa khayrat); zakat is a debt owed to Allah Ta‘ala, which must be paid in any case, while generosity is related to voluntary charity and almsgiving. The purpose of the recitation of the Qur’an (dawr-e-Qur’an) was that the memorization and precision of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would become even more perfected.
