Hadith 3664

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the month of Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month of Ramadan has begun, it is a blessed month, Allah Almighty has made fasting in this month obligatory upon you, in this month the gates of Paradise are opened and all the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are also chained. In this month there is a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of the blessing of this night is truly deprived.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The opening of the gates of Paradise, the closing of the gates of Hell, and the chaining of the devils—these words should be understood in their literal sense. Only the last matter raises the question: if the devils are chained, then why does the cycle of disobedience continue during the sacred month?

Various answers have been given to this, for example:

(۱) Besides the devils, there are other causes of evil and sin, such as wicked souls, evil habits, and human devils.

(۲) Only some devils are chained, not all, as is mentioned in one narration: ((صُفِّدَتْ مَرَدَۃُ الشَّیَاطِیْنِ)) … “The most rebellious devils are chained.”

(۳) The chaining of the devils applies to those who fast while fully observing the conditions, restrictions, and etiquettes of fasting.

(۴) It means that the evil of the devils is reduced; they cannot mislead people in the same way as they do in other months—either their power is taken away or the faith of the believers is strengthened.

Practically, the individuals in our society seem to correspond to the third and fourth meanings, with the third meaning appearing more appropriate. And Allah knows best what is correct.

The last sentence of this blessed hadith is also worthy of reflection: the standing (qiyam) in the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) is a voluntary act of worship, but the one who neglects it is deprived and unfortunate. The intent of the statement is that Allah Ta‘ala, out of His grace, has made the worship of one night superior to the worship of a thousand months. But has the inclination toward goodness in the temperament of the Muslim diminished to such an extent that he cannot even avail himself of this great favor of Allah Ta‘ala? Thus, whoever does not have even this much goodness in his temperament will be considered deprived and wretched. It should be understood that such individuals have a severe lack of inclination toward goodness.
