Hadith 3644

Saeed bin Abi Hind says: Mutarrif, a man from Banu Aamir, narrated that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi Al-Aas Thaqafi asked him to bring milk to drink, but Mutarrif said that he was fasting. So he (Uthman) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that fasting is a shield to protect from Hell, just as a man uses a shield in battle.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Fasting is a shield; through it, a servant is protected in this world from foul speech, obscene talk, sins, and other causes leading to Hell, and in the Hereafter from the punishment of the Fire. Fasting is a shield from Hell in such a way that desires (shahawat) surround Hell, and fasting fundamentally restrains one from desires themselves. In this manner, a Muslim, by means of fasting, remains distant from Hell.
