Hadith 3639

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (Allah Almighty says:) Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except for fasting; it is for Me, and I alone will reward it. Fasting is a shield (that protects from Hell). When any of you is fasting, he should neither use foul language, nor raise his voice, nor speak ignorantly. If someone abuses him or fights with him, he should say: I am fasting, I am fasting. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is more beloved and purer to Allah on the Day of Resurrection than the fragrance of musk. For the fasting person there are two joys, with which he rejoices: when he breaks his fast, he is happy due to his breaking of the fast, and when he meets Allah Almighty, he will be happy due to his fasting.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Reflect on the beginning part of this blessed hadith; only fasting (sawm) has been attributed to Allah Ta‘ala, even though all acts of worship are for Allah Ta‘ala. The reasons for this attribution are as follows:

(1) At no time has any false deity ever been venerated in the form of fasting, whereas various polytheists have been found seeking nearness to their false gods through prayer (salah), prostration (sajdah), charity (sadaqah), and remembrance (dhikr), etc.

(2) Fasting is far removed from the defect of ostentation (riya’), whereas in prayer, pilgrimage (hajj), charity, and jihad, there remains a suspicion of this element. A similar point is that it is possible that in acts of worship other than fasting, fear of someone else may also be at play. For example, some boys have been observed performing prayer out of fear of their parents and teachers’ questioning, otherwise they would not consider it shameful to abandon prayer. However, fasting has no connection with such fear, because it is entirely possible that such people outwardly present themselves as fasting, while in seclusion they may consume food and drink. Therefore, the one who completes the fast, his true intention will be to please Allah Ta‘ala.

(3) The reward for it is so great that only Allah Ta‘ala knows its extent, whereas the reward for other acts of worship has been specified.
