Hadith 3624

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((تَصَدَّقُوا))، قَالَ: رَجُلٌ عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ، قَالَ: ((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ))، قَالَ: عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ آخَرُ، قَالَ: ((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِكَ))، قَالَ: عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ آخَرُ، قَالَ: ((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى وَلَدِكَ))، قَالَ: عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ آخَرُ، قَالَ: ((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى خَادِمِكَ))، قَالَ: عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ آخَرُ، قَالَ: ((أَنْتَ أَبْصَرُ))
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O people! Give charity. A man said: I have one dinar. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Spend it on yourself. He said: I have another dinar. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Give it in charity to your wife. He said: I have another dinar. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Give it in charity to your children. He said: I have another dinar. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Spend it on your servant. He said: I have another dinar. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Now you know best yourself.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Now you yourself know better.” Its meaning is that a person knows which of his relatives is in greater need, or in the light of Shariah, to whom preference should be given, or what the situation is regarding other good deeds. Beginning the expenditure with one’s wife and children does not mean providing them with a luxurious lifestyle, as has become the habit of most people nowadays. If it is said, it would be correct that among all the acts of worship performed by you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, during your life, the greatest in quantity was charity and almsgiving.
