Lady Ra’itah, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with her), who was also the mother of his children, narrates that she was a skilled woman and used to spend on her husband and his children from her earnings. She says: One day I said to my husband, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): “You and your children have deprived me of giving charity; because of you people, I am unable to give anything in charity.” Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “If you do not get a reward for this, then I do not approve of you giving that charity.” Upon hearing this, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I am a skilled woman and make things to sell, but my children, my husband, and I have no other source of income except this, so because I spend on them, I am deprived of giving charity. Will I get a reward for spending on them?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You should spend on them, for whatever you spend on them, you will be rewarded.”
