It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, on a Friday, a man entered the mosque while the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon from the pulpit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and ordered him to perform two units of prayer. He came again the next Friday, and at that time too, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him as before and ordered him (to perform two units of prayer). Then he came on the third Friday as well, and again the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to perform two units of prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give charity." The people did so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave two garments from the collected charity to that man. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "Give charity," that man also gave one of those two garments in charity, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scolded him and expressed displeasure at his action and said: "Look at him, he came to the mosque in a state of extreme destitution. I called him because I hoped that when you saw his condition, you would give him something in charity and provide him with clothing, but you did not do so. Therefore, I told you: Give charity. Then, from what you gave in charity, I gave him two garments. I again told you to give charity, and this time he gave one of those two garments in charity. Take back your garment." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scolded him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … On both occasions, the fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam instructed this man to perform two units (rak‘ahs) and then sit demonstrates the importance of Tahiyyat al-Masjid (the greeting prayer of the mosque), as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave this command even during the sermon (khutbah), and despite the khutbah, he taught him to fulfill this right.

Since the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was gentle with the poor and keenly concerned for their welfare, he encouraged people to give charity (sadaqah) to this poor man. The fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rebuked him for giving charity to this particular poor man establishes the following two important points:

(2) If a person is himself genuinely in need of something, he should not give it as charity.

(1) The ruler (hakim) should be wise and judicious so that he can decide in such matters from whom a certain type of charity should not be accepted.
