Hadith 3609

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is necessary for every Muslim to give charity. He said: If a person does not have the ability to give charity, then what should he do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should work with his own hands, benefit himself, and also give charity. He said: If he does not have the strength to work, then what should he do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then he should help someone in need or distress. He said: If he cannot do even that, then? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should enjoin good or justice. He said: If he does not have the ability to do even that? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He should refrain from evil; this is also charity for him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … No matter what the era is, whatever the temperament and circumstances may be, the Shari‘ah has provided complete guidance for the people of Islam to deal with every time and place. Taking these very conditions and circumstances into consideration, every person will be questioned. What is needed is that we compare the circumstances we are passing through with the rulings of the Shari‘ah and seek a path of salvation for ourselves. Some people have the habit that they are always expressing their compulsions, complaints, and the adversity of circumstances with their tongues; such impatient people should take heed and understand that the compulsions and complaints uttered by the tongue cannot be presented as an excuse in the Hereafter. These people should seek a path of guidance according to their circumstances in the light of Islamic rulings and consult a person of knowledge in this matter. From this blessed hadith, it is also understood that at the very least, it befits a Muslim to refrain from evil. The meaning of "al-malhuf" is one who is wronged, afflicted with sorrow, compelled, and oppressed.
