عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: لَمَّا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ الْجِنِّ تَخَلَّفَ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلَانِ وَقَالَا: نَشْهَدُ الْفَجْرَ مَعَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! فَقَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَمَعَكَ مَاءٌ؟)) قُلْتُ: لَيْسَ مَعِي مَاءٌ وَلَكِنْ مَعِي إِدَاوَةٌ فِيهَا نَبِيذٌ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((تَمْرَةٌ طَيِّبَةٌ وَمَاءٌ طَهُورٌ))، فَتَوَضَّأَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: When it was the night of the jinn, two individuals among them stayed behind and they said: "O Messenger of Allah! We will perform the Fajr prayer with you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Do you have water?" I said: "I do not have water, but I have nabidh in a vessel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pure dates and purifying water."
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the copy of Al-Fath al-Rabbani in my possession, it is written as "thamaratun" (with ثاء). However, in Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi, it is "tamaratun" (with تاء), and this appears to be correct, and the translation has been done accordingly. However, the meaning would be correct in both cases.
