It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Which charity is the most virtuous?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The charity given by a person of little means through his own hard work is the best, and begin (spending) with those whose maintenance is your responsibility."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {اَلَّذِیْخَلَقَالْمَوْتَوَالْحَیَاۃَلِیَبْلُوَکُمْاَیُّکُمْاَحْسَنُعَمَلًا} (Surah al-Mulk: 2), meaning: “(It is Allah) Who created death and life so that He may test you as to which of you is best in deed.”
A magnificent blessed hadith: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “A single dirham surpassed one hundred thousand dirhams.” They asked: “How is that?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “A man had two dirhams; he gave one dirham in charity, and another man went to his vast wealth, took out one hundred thousand dirhams from it, and gave them in charity.” (Nasa’i: 2527)
In reality, the appreciative gaze of Allah, the Exalted, first falls upon the excellence of the deed, and then upon its abundance. A poor man, after labor and hardship, gathered a small amount of wealth and, barely meeting his own expenses, spent a very small portion of it in the path of Allah with such yearning that his name might be included among those who give charity. The value of such a person’s deed is, in any case, greater than that of a wealthy person who was raised in an environment of abundant blessings and spends a portion of his income in the path of Allah, the Exalted.
