Hadith 359

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), describing the manner of the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah and had a bucket of Zamzam water brought, from which he drank and also performed ablution. He said: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! Draw water. If I did not fear that you would be overpowered, I would have drawn water with you."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is understood from this that performing ablution (wudu) with Zamzam water is permissible. The meaning of the last sentence is that if the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself had drawn the water, then people, considering this to be a practical Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and related to Hajj, would have rushed to do the same, and Banu Abd al-Muttalib would have been deprived of this honor. This would have led to chaos and disruption of order.
