It is narrated from Abu Uraif bin Suraee’ that a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him): There was an orphan child under my care, I gave him a slave girl as charity, then that child passed away and I am his heir (now what will happen to that slave girl)? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: I will tell you a hadith which I myself heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the matter is that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse as charity in the way of Allah, then when he saw that the man had put it up for sale at a place, he intended to buy it back, but when he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from doing so and said: When you give something as charity, then let it go (i.e., do not think of taking it back in any way).
