Hadith 3549

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a beggar came and asked her (for something). She told her servant: Give him something. So the servant brought something to give him. In another narration, it is mentioned: Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) instructed Sayyida Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she should first bring the thing to her so that she could see its quantity. (Upon hearing this) the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Aisha! Do not give by counting and measuring, otherwise Allah the Exalted will also give you by counting and measuring.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of the narration in Sunan al-Nasa’i is as follows: Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha says: Once a beggar came to me while the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was also present. I ordered that something be given to him, but first I called the one who was to give and looked at the thing (to see what was being given and in what quantity). The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Do you not wish that nothing should enter your house nor leave it except with your knowledge?” I said: Yes. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Wait, O Aisha! Do not count (what you give), lest Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, count (what He gives) to you.” The meaning of this blessed hadith is that a person should not keep account of the things given in charity and, considering them to be many and sufficient, refrain from giving further charity. By doing so, Allah ta’ala also closes the doors of sustenance. What should happen is that a person continues to give charity according to his means and, keeping in view the large amounts already given, should not refrain from giving charity in the future, nor should he fear poverty from Allah ta’ala.
