Hilal bin Husayn says: I stayed with Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). We gathered in a gathering, and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that once he spent the morning in such a state that, due to the severity of hunger, he had tied a stone to his stomach. His wife or mother said to him: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him for something. When so-and-so went and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave him, and similarly, so-and-so also went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, and he also gave him. I (Abu Sa'id) replied: I will first try to obtain something (by some other means), then I did so, but I did not get anything from anywhere. Eventually, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time he was delivering a sermon. At that time, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: Whoever refrains from asking, Allah will protect him, and whoever adopts contentment, Allah will make him content, and whoever asks us for something, we will give him something. However, whoever refrains from asking us and adopts contentment, he will be more beloved to us than the one who asks. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After hearing this hadith, I returned and did not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for anything, but Allah provided us with so much sustenance that I do not know of any household among the Ansar who is wealthier than us.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The way Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu fulfilled the requirements of the blessed hadith with such honor and protective jealousy, its blessings are endless. However, its beginning lies in the servant’s patience. The true Provider (Razzaq) is Allah Ta‘ala; all creation is dependent upon Him, and He is free of all need from everyone. He has decreed to provide sustenance to each and every one. We should, therefore, seek our sustenance from Him in a good manner.
