(Second chain of narration) In this it is stated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate that date, but he could not sleep the entire night. One of his wives asked: O Messenger of Allah! What was the reason that you suffered from sleeplessness last night? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: I found a date under my side and I ate it. There were also dates of charity kept with us, so now I fear that perhaps that date was from those charity dates.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The doubt that occurred to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not merely a baseless suspicion; rather, there must have been various indications for it. It is possible that on that day, charity dates (dates given as sadaqah) had been brought to the house of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam so that he could distribute them, and for this reason, he became doubtful. In any case, in such a situation, there is room for falling into doubt.
Those who consider the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to be ‘Knower of the Unseen’ (Alim al-Ghayb) should reflect at this point: If he knew the unseen, and the date was indeed from charity, then why did he eat it? And if it was not from charity, then why did he spend the whole night in sleeplessness and restlessness? (Abdullah Rafiq)
