Hadith 3477

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not lawful for a wealthy person to take zakat, except for three people: one who is fighting in jihad, a traveler, and a (wealthy) man whose neighbor was given zakat and he (the neighbor) gave him a gift.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The hadith is clear in its meaning. It is also understood from this that it is permissible to accept the invitation and gifts of those who consume zakat wealth. Some wealthy people have been observed to avoid such things, considering them as zakat wealth, whereas the ruling of zakat cannot be applied to such invitations and gifts, because the deserving person becomes the owner of the zakat wealth and can spend it wherever he wishes.

The case of the traveler is as follows: a person is wealthy, but due to certain reasons during travel, his travel provisions are exhausted. Now, instead of trying to borrow from someone to complete his journey, he should, if zakat is available somewhere, take from it according to the predominant assumption, in an amount that will suffice him for his journey.
