Hadith 3437

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man from Banu Tamim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: O Messenger of Allah! If I pay zakat to your appointed representative, will I be absolved before Allah and His Messenger? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, when you pay zakat to my representative, your responsibility will be fulfilled and you will receive its reward. However, whoever makes any alteration (and misappropriates it), he will be sinful.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this hadith, it is understood that when a person gives zakat to the caliph of the time or his appointed agent, he is absolved of his obligation for this duty. If, contrary to expectation, such a responsible person commits a breach of trust, then he himself will be held accountable for it; the one giving zakat will be rewarded by Allah, the Exalted. However, this principle applies when there is a good opinion regarding the trustworthiness of the agent, etc. Otherwise, as far as possible, the wealthy person should himself deliver his zakat to those who are deserving. But the condition for doing so is that no major harm or disorder should result from it.
