It is narrated by Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people: What is your opinion regarding the (charity) wealth that has remained with us? The people said: O Commander of the Faithful! We have kept you busy from your family, business, and trade, so you should keep this wealth with yourself. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me (Ali): What is your opinion? I said: The people have already indicated one thing to you. But he said: You should also say something. I said: Why do you turn your certainty into conjecture? He said: You will have to speak openly. I said: Fine, I will explain clearly. Do you remember that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent you to collect zakat, and when you went to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he refused to give zakat and there was a dispute between you and him? You said to me: Come with me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So we went, but when we saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a distressed state, we returned. When we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the next day, we found him content and cheerful. You told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the matter of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: An uncle is like a father. Then we mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his distress on the first day and his cheerfulness on the second day, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you came to me yesterday, I had two dinars of charity left with me, and I was distressed because of them, but this morning I distributed them, so I appeared cheerful and content when you came. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! You have spoken absolutely correctly, I am grateful to you from beginning to end.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The view of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu was that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not experience contentment of heart (inshirah al-sadr) until he had only two dinars left with him. Therefore, it was fitting for Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu as well to emulate the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in this matter. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said to Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu: “I am grateful to you both at the beginning and at the end.” In this statement, “at the beginning” means that Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu did not say, as others did, that the remaining wealth should be kept by Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu himself; and “at the end” means that after presenting an argument, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu reminded Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu of the incident of the two dinars of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. From this blessed hadith, those entrusted with responsibilities should realize the weight of their duty, let alone those who would usurp such trusts as if they were personal property.
