It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, he says: We went towards Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. One of our companions went to a deserted place to relieve himself. When he picked up a brick to perform istinja, he found a gold nugget there. He picked it up and brought it to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him the whole story. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Weigh it. He weighed it and it was two hundred dirhams. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: This is rikaz, and one-fifth (khumus) is due as zakat on it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is a difference of opinion regarding the definition of rikaz: According to the majority, Imam Malik, and Imam Shafi’i, it refers to the treasure buried in the earth from the era of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), which is obtained without any effort or hardship. According to Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Thawri, it refers to the minerals created by Allah Ta’ala in their original state within the earth. Ibn Athir and the author of Qamus have mentioned both of these meanings for rikaz. It is evident that it is necessary to determine one of these meanings. The view of the majority appears to be the stronger one, as Shaykh al-Albani has said: In the language, both meanings are intended, but in the Shari’ah, only the buried treasure from the era of Jahiliyyah is meant, as is understood from the hadith of our master Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. (Tamaam al-Minnah: p. 376) Observe the hadith of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that comes at number three and its explanation.
