Lady Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) says: My maternal aunt and I both went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while we were wearing gold bangles. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked us: Do you pay zakat on this jewelry? We said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not fear that Allah Almighty will make you wear bangles of fire in exchange for this? Pay its zakat.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Abdullah bin Shaddad bin Haad narrates: We went to the noble wife of the Messenger, Aisha radi Allahu anha. She said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to me and, seeing large silver rings on my hand, said: “Aisha! What are these?” I replied: O Messenger of Allah! I have had these made so that I may adorn myself for you. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Do you pay zakat on them?” I said: No. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Then these are sufficient for you for the Fire of Hell.” (Abu Dawood: 1565) The second hadith of this chapter also, in light of these evidences, appears to be authoritative. The discussion regarding the nisab (minimum amount liable) and rate of zakat for gold and silver has already taken place; the original standard is that same nisab and rate. It makes no difference whether the gold and silver are in the form of bullion or crafted into jewelry, whether they are being used or not. It should be clear that zakat is obligatory only on jewelry made of gold and silver; zakat is not due on jewelry made from other precious metals or stones, even if their value exceeds that of gold.
