Sayyiduna Alaa bin Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me towards Bahrain or Hajar. Whenever I would enter a garden that belonged to different brothers and one of them had become Muslim, I would take one-tenth (ushr) as zakat from the Muslim and collect kharaj from the others.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: Kharaj: This is the jizyah that is collected from the dhimmis. Although this hadith is weak, collecting jizyah from the dhimmi people is a matter established by Shari‘ah. The monthly or yearly amount will be decided by the ruler of the time. However, Sayyiduna Mu‘adh radi Allahu anhu narrates: “The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded him to take one dinar from every adult.” (Abu Dawud: 3038, Tirmidhi: 623, Nasa’i: 5/26, Ibn Majah: 1803)
One dinar is equivalent to four and a half (4+) mashas of gold. This kharaj was collected annually per person. (Abdullah Rafiq)
