Brief Explanation
Benefits: The upper part of this sa’ (a measure) used to be sealed by the authorities so that its quantity would not be decreased or increased. Producing crops from the earth and providing sustenance to humans is the grace and favor of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala has sought recompense for this favor in such a way that one-tenth or one-twentieth of agricultural produce should be given in His path as zakat, which is an extremely small amount compared to the total yield.

From these ahadith, it is understood that for zakat to be obligatory on crops, it is necessary that they reach five wasq; this is called the nisab of zakat. Its details are that one wasq consists of sixty sa’ (plural: aswaq), thus the total amount for five wasq is three hundred sa’. While the weight of one sa’ is approximately two kilograms and one hundred grams, in this way the total weight of five wasq becomes fifteen man and thirty kilograms. It is thus clear that the nisab of zakat for crops is fifteen man and thirty kilograms.
