Hadith 3401

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It was asked from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whether there is zakat on donkeys. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Nothing has been revealed to me regarding this, except for this one comprehensive verse: {فَمَنْ یَّعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّۃٍ خَیْرًا یَرَہٗ۔ وَمَنْ یَّعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّۃٍ شَرًّا یَرَہٗ۔} (Surah Az-Zalzalah, 8), that is: Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: From the ahadith of this chapter, it is understood that there is no obligatory zakat on slaves, horses, and donkeys in an absolute sense. However, it is necessary to pay the sadaqat al-fitr (charity of breaking the fast) on behalf of slaves. The words of the two verses mentioned in the last hadith are extremely concise, yet they encompass every kind of good. The meaning of this hadith is that there is no zakat on donkeys; however, if someone wishes to give these animals to someone else, he will be rewarded by Allah Ta'ala.
