It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever does not pay the zakat of his wealth, on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be turned into a bald snake, and it will pursue its owner. He will run away from it to escape, but the snake will keep chasing him, saying: I am your treasure. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse from the Book of Allah as the confirmation of this hadith: {سَیُطَوَّقُوْنَ مَا بَخِلُوْا بِہِ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ۔} (Surah Aal-e-Imran, 180) meaning: Those who were miserly will soon have it hung as a collar around their necks on the Day of Resurrection. Imam Sufyan once said: It will be hung as a collar around their necks.
